Updated May2011
I have decided that when I get a job and get some dosh together
I want to have the car stripped of paint and a full re spray in
the original metallic blue, still don't know what the colour is
but I'm sure it will be a standard BL one of the period.
The front screen leaks like a sieve and the bonding has probably
come away with the rust and water leaks into the front drivers side
foot well. So I park it with the nose pointing up the drive and
I take the carpets up when rain is forcast so the water runs down
the inside of the engine bulkhead and onto the floor and it exits
through a hole in the rear foot well. I did paint the floor with
the blue paint I got just to protect it from the dampness, also
bought a de-humidifier to dry it out, fighting a loosing battle
and the leather seats are going fast. Have found a guy who will
re bond the screen so just looking for a big enough window in the
weather (British SUMMER) to take the screen out and clean up the
flanges and stick some paint on and get it stuck back in!
The wood veneer is in quite good nick but needs a re-lacquer, I
have started with some of the door cappings, going to take the dash
out one day and stip the old off, give it a rub down and spray some
new lacquer on, was bulking at putting varnish on and came on the
idea of using car clear lacquer., I built a guitar over the xmas
period and sprayed the neck on that with lacquer from Halfords and
it looked a treat, can even rub it back with a bit of wet and dry
to take the high gloss shine off.
Front passenger side wing has a hole developing over the head lamp
and a couple of other crusty areas which need repair, and I have
found a source of metal to make patches now, so some time soon the
panel beating hammers and dollies are coming out and I going to
make some patches. Was going to buy a couple of wings new, you can
still get them but £169 + vat and delivery is a lot of cash
when you don't have any.
The new door I fitted last August still hasn't been painted, it's
still grey and the tank covers rear valance and sill are still grey
primer, can't make my mind up to spray them black in keeping with
the rest or wait till I get a re spray, in which case they may be
grey for a long time!
Update
The door did get a coat of paint in 2009 if my memory serves me
well, the sill, tank covers and rear valance are still in grey primer
as I type this. The screen got fixed by me and then the following
next week got replaced by Auto Windscreens coz it broke. Don't think
it was any thing I did..
I bought in early 2010 a better dashboard from a guy in Donny via
eBay, when I went to pick it up he was proud as punch to show me
his other bits. He 'sort of' broke jaguars to suppliment his income
and to preserve his own collection. He firstly showed me four doors
'matching' in metallic blue, didn't really want them as I had nowhere
to put them, he then proceeded to tell me about a boot lid and bonnet
he had newly painted, he showed me them, the boot lid, bonnet and
four doors where for his S3 but he had decided it was to much work,
so.. £200 quid lighter they where mine, now how to get them
home and where to put them, for an extra £25 for petrol the
guy from Donny delivered them in his Tranny, once delivered I rearranged
my garage to house them, they are considerably better than whats
on presently.
Towards the back end of 2010 I bought 2 wings off eBay for £150
from a guy in Sheffield, they where advertised as rust free, they
weren't, they where supposed to be Series 3, one was a Series 2,
they had filler on them, they where better than mine. After judicial
repairs they are ready to be stripped ready for painting and fitting.
The plan is to get the doors, bonnet, boot and wings painted in
bonny blue, strip the rear wings and roof of the Daimler, paint
it bonny blue, along with the door closures, sills, tank covers,
rear valance etal, fit the newer\ better bonnet, boot, doors, wings
and a nice black vynil roof and we should have a presentable motor
car again.
This time in 'blue'
Er! plus doing all the other jobs I find along the way
